While many people fully embrace “the holiday spirit,” my children and I do not. So rather than feeling Grinch-like this Christmas season, our gift to each other – and ourselves – was to spend a week at my daughter’s timeshare in Cabo San Lucas.
It was the perfect way for us to celebrate Christmas!
And it gave me an opportunity to check wheelchair accessibility so that Carrieanna can join us on a future trip.
Hacienda Del Mar
There were six of us, and we had two adjacent apartment-style room which made it easy for us to plan outings, prepare and share food, and just “hang out” without being in each other’s space too much.
The spacious bedrooms were upstairs, and neither of the bathrooms were handicap accessible.
I inquired at the front desk to see if Hacienda Del Mar has accessible rooms. I was shown a “wheelchair accessible” suite – the doorways are wide and there is plenty of space for the wheelchair to roll within the suite. However, there is a 6-inch step-over lip to get into the shower, and there were no grab bars in the toilet area. Definitely not a fully-accessible room, and there are none on-site that are.
Sheraton Grand Los Cabos
The Hacienda Del Mar is the timeshare side of the property that includes the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, so I strolled to that side of the property and inquired at the hotel’s front desk.
I was delighted to find that the hotel does have three fully-accessible rooms. The front desk was kind enough to arrange for me to enter, inspect and photograph one of the rooms.
How I Spent My Christmas Vacation
Our agenda for the week included LOTS of relaxation, time spent by the pool, adult beverages and local food!
We also included a whale-watching excursion in a glass bottom boat, where we not only saw the brightly-colored fish in the bay, but also witnessed two humpback whales swimming directly under the boat!
The Thursday evening art walk and tequila tasting gave us an opportunity to explore nearby San José del Cabo.
And, of course, we all loved the local cuisine!
My granddaughter, Jennifer, has a medical condition that requires her to avoid gluten, and she was very grateful to find many gluten-free options. We also went to Costco upon our arrival and stocked up on food that she could eat (as well as liquor and snacks),
The Resort Property
I found many wheelchair-accessible ramps on the Hacienda Del Mar | Sheraton Grand property, although sometimes the brick and stone walkways were uneven and would require attentive maneuvering.
There was also a small accessible restroom near one of the pools and the sports bar.
In addition to the wheelchair-accessible rooms at the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, much of the resort property is accessible, including many of the on-site restaurants.
Because I did not make the transportation arrangements I have no personal information about accessible vans, taxis or rental cars. However, I contacted my friends at Travel by Divine, who mentioned Transcabo, a private transportation and shuttle company in Cabo San Lucas.
